The formulas

MetricFormulaExample
CTRclicks ÷ impressions × 100400 ÷ 20,000 = 2%
CPCspend ÷ clicks$300 ÷ 400 = $0.75
CPMspend ÷ impressions × 1,000$15
Conversion ratesales ÷ clicks × 10012 ÷ 400 = 3%
CPAspend ÷ sales$300 ÷ 12 = $25
ROASrevenue ÷ spend$900 ÷ $300 = 3×

Break-even ROAS

ROAS counts revenue, not profit. If you keep 40% of each sale as profit, the ads only pay for themselves when ROAS is at least 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.5×. In the example, a 3× ROAS on $300 brings $900 of sales and $360 of profit, so the ads make $60 after paying for themselves. At a 25% margin the same ads would lose money.

How we checked this

Before every update, this calculator is run in a real browser with these known answers, and it must match all of them:

  • 20,000 views, 400 clicks, $300 spend: CTR 2%, CPC $0.75 ✓
  • 12 sales, $900 revenue: CPA $25, ROAS 3×, $60 profit after ads at 40% margin ✓

Questions people ask

What is a good ROAS?

It depends on your margin. The break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ your profit margin, so a 25% margin needs at least 4× and a 50% margin needs 2×.

What's the difference between CPC and CPA?

CPC is what you pay for each click; CPA is what you pay for each sale. CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate.

What is CPM?

The cost per 1,000 impressions (views) of your ad.
