Enter two fractions or mixed numbers and pick an operation. You get the simplified answer, the mixed number, the decimal and every step written out.
How to work with fractions
Adding and subtracting fractions
Fractions can only be added or subtracted when their bottoms (denominators) match. Find the lowest common denominator, rewrite each fraction with it, then add or subtract the tops.
1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
Multiplying fractions
Multiply the tops together and the bottoms together, then simplify. No common denominator is needed.
2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2
Dividing fractions: keep, change, flip
Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction upside down. Then multiply.
2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 × 4/3 = 8/9
Mixed numbers
Turn a mixed number into an improper fraction first: multiply the whole number by the bottom, add the top, and keep the same bottom. So 2 3/4 = (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4. Work with 11/4, then turn the answer back into a mixed number at the end.
Common mistakes
- Adding the bottoms. 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5. The bottoms must match first.
- Flipping the wrong fraction when dividing. Only the second fraction (the one you divide by) gets flipped.
- Multiplying mixed numbers part by part. 2 1/2 × 2 1/2 is not 4 1/4. Convert first: 5/2 × 5/2 = 25/4 = 6 1/4.
- Not simplifying. 6/12 is correct but 1/2 is the expected final answer. Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common factor.

How we checked this
Before every update, this calculator is run in a real browser with these known answers, and it must match all of them:
- 2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 8/9 ✓
- 2 3/4 ÷ 2/3 = 4 1/8 ✓
- 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6 ✓

Questions people ask
How do you divide fractions?
Keep the first fraction, change the division sign to multiplication, and flip the second fraction. Then multiply the tops and the bottoms. For example 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2.
How do I type a mixed number?
Put a space between the whole number and the fraction: 2 1/2 means two and a half. You can also type whole numbers (3) or decimals (0.75).
Why does my answer show a line over some digits?
Some fractions never end as decimals. 2/3 is 0.666… forever, so the repeating part is shown with a line over it.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common factor. 18/24 has a greatest common factor of 6, so it simplifies to 3/4. The simplify tool does this for any fraction.
Can the answer be negative?
Yes. Type a minus sign before a fraction, like −1/2, or subtract a bigger fraction from a smaller one.
